Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch”

Introduction

  • Launched: 1957 as part of Omega’s Speedmaster line, originally designed as a racing chronograph.

  • Ref. CK2915: The very first Speedmaster model.

NASA and the Moon

  • 1965: After rigorous testing, NASA officially certified the Omega Speedmaster as the only watch suitable for manned space missions.

  • 1969 – Apollo 11: Buzz Aldrin wore a Speedmaster when he stepped onto the lunar surface (Neil Armstrong left his in the Lunar Module as a backup for the onboard timer).

  • Became known as the “Moonwatch.”

Why It’s Iconic

  1. First watch worn on the Moon (Apollo 11, July 20, 1969).

  2. NASA-approved: Survived extreme tests of temperature, vacuum, shocks, and vibrations.

  3. Design Longevity: The Speedmaster Professional has remained visually similar for decades.

  4. Cultural Impact: Featured in films, space memorabilia, and loved by astronauts, collectors, and enthusiasts.

Notable Moments

  • Apollo 13 (1970): The Speedmaster played a critical role in timing a 14-second engine burn to safely return the crew to Earth.

  • Continuous Production: Unlike many historic watches, the Speedmaster “Moonwatch” is still in production today, with manual-wind mechanical movements.
