The First Omega Seamaster Watch History

The first Omega Seamaster was introduced in 1948, making it one of the longest-running watch collections still in production today.

Here are the key details:

  • Release Year: 1948
  • Reason for Creation: Omega launched the Seamaster to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary (Omega was founded in 1848).
  • Inspiration: The watch was based on Omega's experience producing waterproof military watches for the British armed forces during World War II.
  • Water Resistance: Unlike many earlier "waterproof" watches, the Seamaster used an innovative rubber O-ring gasket, inspired by submarine technology, which provided greater durability than leather gaskets.

The First Seamaster Models

The earliest Seamasters were elegant dress watches rather than diving watches. They featured:

  • Automatic or manual-wind movements
  • Stainless steel and gold cases
  • Water resistance suitable for everyday wear
  • Classic round cases measuring approximately 34–36 mm

Notable early references include:

  • CK 2518 (Automatic)
  • CK 2577 (Automatic)
  • CK 2757 (Manual wind)

Evolution of the Seamaster

  • 1948: Original waterproof dress watches introduced.
  • 1957: Omega launched the Seamaster 300 (CK2913), its first professional dive watch, capable of 200 meters of water resistance despite its name.
  • 1960s–1970s: The Seamaster line expanded with professional diving models, including the Seamaster 600 "Ploprof" and the Seamaster 1000.
  • 1993: Omega introduced the modern Seamaster Professional 300M, recognizable by its wave-pattern dial and helium escape valve.
  • 1995: The Seamaster Professional 300M gained worldwide fame when Pierce Brosnan wore it as James Bond in GoldenEye. Since then, the Seamaster has been closely associated with the Bond franchise.

The 1948 Omega Seamaster remains a landmark in watchmaking history, as it established the foundation for one of Omega's most successful and enduring collections.
