The Omega Speedmaster Ref. 2915-1 is one of the most important and collectible watches in Omega's history. Introduced in 1957, it was the first-generation Speedmaster, originally designed as a precision chronograph for motorsport, racing, and other sporting applications—not specifically for space travel.

 Why It Is So Important

The 2915 was the watch that established the Speedmaster name and design language. Its tachymeter scale allowed the wearer to calculate speed over a measured distance, making it particularly useful for racing.

It also introduced several design characteristics that became legendary:

Broad Arrow hands → steel tachymeter bezel → three-register chronograph → straight lugs

The later Speedmaster would evolve considerably, eventually becoming the watch selected by NASA for spaceflight.

 Connection to the Moonwatch

The 2915-1 predates the Speedmaster's NASA history by several years.

Collectibility

An authentic Speedmaster 2915-1 is extraordinarily desirable. Original examples with the correct Broad Arrow hands, steel bezel, dial, case and Cal. 321 movement can command very high six-figure prices, while exceptional examples have sold for considerably more at major auctions.

One important caution for collectors: because of the enormous value of the 2915, originality is critical. Refinished dials, replacement bezels, incorrect hands, replacement movements and altered cases can dramatically affect both historical importance and value.

The 2915-1 isn't merely a rare Omega—it is the watch that started the Speedmaster dynasty.
